The Passerby

One day, a kind man was on top of a building. He looked down and saw a lot of passersby walking to and fro obviously in a hurry to go where they need to go. Then struck by an errant thought, he dropped a lovely red rose and it fell on the ground as an old lady was passing by. Totally surprised, the lady picked up the flower and happily went on her way.

The kind man was disappointed. The lady didn’t even look up to see where the fallen flower came from. So, he got a five hundred peso bill, rolled it and let it fall. It landed on an old man’s shoulder. The old man, filled with felicity for such luck picked up the bill  and put it in his pocket.

More disappointed than ever, the kind man got a small piece of stone and dropped it where it fell on a young man’s head. The young man swore, looked up and cursed whoever dropped the stone on his head.

Why is it that we rarely acknowledge the beautiful things that come our way and where they came from, but are so much affected by adversity and pain? And why do we only ‘look up’ when we are hurt?
