Eva Peron

“I demanded more rights for women because I know what women had to put up with.”

In life and in death, Eva Peron is the most famous woman in Argentina. She was named ‘Spiritual Leader of the Nation.’

She was born Maria Eva Duarte. She was  from a poor family in a town called Los Toldos. When she was 15, she went to Buenos Aires to be an actress. There she met  a prominent politician, Juan Domingo Peron. They got married and in just a year, Eva became the First Lady of Argentina.

As the First Lady, she spent her life helping the poor people of Argentina and gave the women the right to vote. She set up the Social Aid Foundation. She visited the sick, she gave away sewing machines, clothes or whatever was needed. She redistributed the nation’s wealth from the rich to the poor.

Her noble works, however, did not last very long as she died of uterine cancer in 1952. She was only 33 years old.

  • She is the inspiration for the movie and the play entitled Evita. She is different from Isabel Peron who was a former President of Argentina. Eva or Evita was likened to our own Imelda Marcos during the reign of Ferdinand Marcos. Thanks for the post. God bless you all always.

What comes to mind right away is the song ‘Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.’ And when the movie came out, we used to tease our mum, because her name is so similar to Evita’s name. :-D
