Margaret Thatcher, The IRON LADY
If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.
Margaret Thatcher, the first female prime minister of Great Britain, was born Margaret Hilda Roberts. She was born on Oct. 13, 1925. She went to school at the age of 5. At 9 years old she won a poetry reading contest. Offering her congratulations, the head mistress told her ‘You were lucky to win’ young Margaret replied ‘I wasn’t lucky. I deserved it.’
She was elected prime minister on May 4, 1979. One of the most controversial issues of her administration was her battle against trades unions. When mine workers went on strike in 1984, they were forced back to work a year after. Another defining feature of her premiership was the poll tax which was viewed as unfair because everybody had to pay the same amount regardless of income. This caused her popularity to drop until she resigned from office on Nov. 22, 1990.
She became a member of the House of Lords in 1992 as Baroness Thatcher of Kesteven. On Aug. 24, 2008, it was publicly revealed that the Iron Lady has been suffering from dementia.
