All They Want For Christmas

Well I guess I’m not the only one counting. Yes, it’s almost Christmas and I’m excited. Not for me, though, for my kids. Since the time I had children, I started to see Christmas in a different way. Or maybe not just me but all other parents out there. You see, when you had children, you don’t think about you anymore, you started to think of them especially during the Christmas season, what they would like to eat, what they would like to wear, what they would like to have.

My eldest wants her very own camera, my middle child wants one of those popular hp netbooks and my youngest child wants a big Transformer robot. Would I give those stuff to them? They wish!

The CHOCOLATE BAR

MS Badge

Trina is so excited. It is Venus’ birthday and she was invited. Venus is the new girl in school and Trina feels flattered to be invited to the party. She had a problem, though, what present to give to her new friend. Venus is a child of a rich man and it seems like the girl has everything she needs, nice clothes, cool toys and gadgets. It took Trina a while before she finally decided to give Venus a bar of imported chocolate.

She saved all her money from her daily allowance and asked for additional pesos from her mother. The day before Venus’ birthday, Trina bought the chocolate bar, but as she was wrapping it with a colored paper, her little brother Gio saw it and asked for it. Trina said no but Gio kept on crying. What can she expect, Gio is just a baby and he doesn’t know what is his and what isn’t.

The following day, Trina was excited. The party is not until 4pm so she can still do some errands for her mother. When she got back home, however, she saw scattered on the floor the colored paper that she used to wrap the chocolate with and she saw it just as Gio was about to rip the chocolate bar open. Trina snatched the bar off her little brother’s hand and in her anger slap Gio in the arm. The little boy cried so ran came their mother to ask what happened.

Trina told her that Gio tried to eat the chocolate. Her mother said that though she knew Gio was wrong, it wasn’t right for Trina to hurt her little brother over it. But to this, Trina said that if only her mother took closer watch over Gio it wouldn’t have happened then she suddenly ran to the room to change clothes.

Without speaking to her mother, Trina left the house. In her hand was the unwrapped chocolate bar that she put in an old paper bag. Quite unhappy about what happened at home, she went to Venus’ house.

The party was grand. Almost all her classmates were in there and so were their teachers. Everybody was wearing party dresses and obviously everybody was having fun. That’s except for Trina who felt sorry for what she did to her brother and what she said to her mother. At the end of the party, just as the visitors are about to go, Trina searched for Venus and handed her the paper bag with the chocolate inside and greeted her ‘Happy Birthday.’

Venus hugged her and thanked her for coming. As Trina was about to walk away, she heard Venus’ mother’s voice saying.. ‘Venus, is that chocolate??

Trina turned around and saw that a small portion of the chocolate bar was coming out of the paper bag. Venus answered..

‘Yes, mama..’

‘You are not going to eat that. You know you are not supposed to eat that..’

Venus couldn’t answer especially when she saw that Trina was looking at them. She felt she needed to explain..

‘I have a recurring sore throat and I get sick every time I eat something very sweet particularly chocolate..’ Venus explained to Trina.

Trina just nodded. So, there goes her special gift to Venus… She headed for the door but..

‘Venus..?’ Trina suddenly called.

‘What is it, Trina?’

‘If you can not eat the chocolate, can I just have it back?’

Venus looked puzzled but handed the paper bag to Trina..

‘Thank you. Promise, I’ll give you something else tomorrow. Something that wouldn’t hurt your throat..’

Trina ran home. She apologized to her mother and to Gio. Then, she opened the chocolate bar and gave a small portion to her little brother. Gio was very happy. It was his first time to eat chocolate and it really really tastes good. Trina made sure Gio eats little so as not to have a sore throat.

The following morning in school, Trina gave Venus a bag of freshly picked guava from their own backyard. Venus was very happy and hoped that Trina will come again to her next birthday party.

The Mayor’s Daughter

MS Badge

The entire town was busy. All the people are preparing for the arrival of the kind daughter of their beloved mayor. They prepared a program for her entertainment.

The mayor is a distinguished man known for his integrity and good will. He is a just mayor and everybody loves him. His equally distinguished daughter had just become a doctor and decided to come home for good, in order to serve the people. She has been gone for eight years and, except for occasional visits, has never been around much for the past years. Her arrival, therefore, is a much awaited moment in town. On the day of her arrival, however, a storm struck the province and news had it that all trips to and from the town were cancelled.

The people were disappointed. Their excitement was extinguished. They had to wait for the next day and almost everybody went to bed in foul mood.

Then, in the dead of night while the rain was pouring violently, loud, urgent knocks were heard. The residents of the first house totally ignored them thinking they might be branches off surrounding trees. The second house ignored them as well afraid to open the door for strangers. The third house opened the door and found a woman a missing shoe, soaking wet and shaking with cold. The woman asked for an accommodation saying her lift didn’t come because of the storm and she had no place to stay. The residents of the third house answered they had no place for her and closed the door. The residents of the fourth house said the same and the fourth, and the fifth, and so on.

The woman felt hopeless. If no one accepts her, she had to sleep on the street and might get sick. Finally, one house let her in. It was that of a poor family. The house was small that the family who lives there sleep together. There was no one to sleep on except a wobbly chair. She thanked her hosts and changed for dry and warm clothes. Only when she was already comfortable did she notice a child tucked at the center of the bed. The child was feverish. Her mother said he’s been sick for three days and because of the storm, they were not able to go out and buy medicine.

The woman got her bag and brought out a thermometer and sphygmomanometer. After checking the child’s vital signs, she brought out a bottle of syrup and give the child some medicine. The child fell asleep after that. The following morning, the weather became bright and clear and the woman very gratefully thanked her hosts and left.

That afternoon, the townspeople were, once again, expecting for the arrival of the mayor’s daughter. They were surprised, however, when instead of from out of town, the vehicle approached from inside the town, then  out came the woman who was knocking on almost every house last night.

She explained that she couldn’t wait to go home last night so she braved the storm and lost her shoe along the way. Her umbrella was blown by the strong wind so she got wet, tired, hungry and cold. Then, she thanked the family who gave her place for the night. The townspeople were speechless. They can only clap their hands look at each other as the mayor’s daughter resumed her seat.

I Wonder

Just like any other workplace during the Christmas season, ours is buzzing with excitement over the upcoming traditional Christmas Outing, which is normally held out of town. What makes it all the more controversial is the annual presentation contest among all branches of our company in which we, our branch, is the defending champion with our spectacular poi dance.

Well, that makes it more challenging for us. If the other branches are thinking of various ways to beat us, we, on the other hand, have to try to outdo ourselves and that is a tall order. What kills us is the expectation from other branches that we are going to do something more creative than the last one. So, we kind of consider impersonating Lady Gaga, fully made-up complete with out-of-this-world costumes, singing and dancing Poker Face. How about that?

Well, if they are serious, maybe I have to start searching the web for eyelash growth products, mine are so short they wouldn’t pass for a Lady Gaga impersonator. I think I also have to do something about my nails, maybe fake ones will do and of course, I need a wig.. I wonder how I would look like..

Mother’s Earrings

MS Badge

Pekto and Sandra are children of the widow, Aling Miding. Pekto is a mischievous boy of 7 and Sandra is about 10. Their father died about 6 years ago and Pekto has no memory of him. He has no memory of how his father used to come home from work bringing food and toys. He has no memory of his father’s accident nor of his death. For Pekto, there was only his mother who works for them and who loves them. For Pekto, his mother is the most beautiful woman in the world.

Sandra is almost grown-up. She remembers her father and she knows how much he loved them. She helps her mother cook native snacks to be sold the whole day. She knows how difficult life is and she wants to help. Most importantly, she wants to give something for her mother. Sandra notices that she is poorly dressed. She doesn’t have nice clothes, shoes or even bags. The only valuable thing her mother has is a pair of pearl earrings. Her mother said it is precious to her because it was given to her by Sandra’s father when Sandra was born. It was indeed her mother’s most valuable possession.

So, Sandra wanted to save money so she could buy something nice for her mother. She sells native cakes in the market and keeps the money her mother gives her at the end of the day. She was saving it to buy a necklace. How beautiful her mother would be if she has a necklace around her neck.

One day, Pekto went to the market to look for Sandra. He was hungry. He wanted to eat so he asked money from her. But Sandra keeps the money. She was saving it for her mother’s necklace. She told Pekto to wait a little longer until they got home as there is always something to eat in their house. Their mother always makes sure of that. So Pekto just went away.

After a while, Sandra heard Pekto crying. Behind him holding his shirt was a fat woman purple with rage. The woman said Pekto broke her glass cabinet to steal some bread.

Pekto cried hard and said he was not going to steal anything. He just tripped and accidentally hit the glass.

The woman said she was going to send Pekto to jail. Sandra was terrified. She asked the fat woman to wait while she call their mother.

Aling Miding was just as terrified as Sandra was. She ran to the market and talked with the fat woman. She despaired when she heard the price of the glass cabinet.

That night, Sandra was so sad. She knows it was her fault. If only she gave Pekto some money, he wouldn’t wander around and break a glass cabinet. Her mother wouldn’t need to sell her earrings in order to pay the woman.

Sandra can see that her mother was crying. So, weeping silently, she got her money from her hiding place and presented it to her. She explained what it was for and gave it to her mother.

“No, Sandra, you don’t need to give it to me..” said her mother.

“Please take it mother and buy another pair of earrings. Please don’t cry anymore..”

“But why would I get another pair of earrings?”

“To replace the one you sold so you can pay the woman for the glass.”

“But what makes you think I want a replacement?”

“Because it is your most valuable possession..”

Mother smiled and embraced Sandra tight..

“No, Sandra.. those earrings were not my most valuable possession.. My most valuable possessions are you and your brother. I would sell anything I have to provide for you because I love you very much..”

Sandra hugged her mother even tighter and never again did she think of buying something valuable for her mother, but  thought of being a good daughter her mother could have…

The Charity Man

MS Badge

Mr. Pablo is known to be a generous and charitable man in their place. During the Christmas season, his is always the biggest name on the list of donations compared with the farmers who give P50 and the ordinary employees who give P100.

He is also known to be a religious person. He goes to church every Sunday, sits on the front pew and sings the loudest among all the parishioners. During basketball leagues, he is always one of the donors of trophies to be given to winning teams. He is always a principal sponsor to weddings and he is always the one who gives the biggest money gift. He is indeed one of the most distinguished persons in town.

At his house, however, is a different story. His wife will not eat until he has come home. His servants can not eat or rest until he is served. Someone has to wake up in the middle of the night to bring him a glass of water when he gets thirsty. They are not allowed to go home on special occasions because he might need them. The servants’ quarters are regularly searched in case they steal something. They are not allowed  to use the telephone. They are not supposed to watch tv because they are paid to do something. What more? They do not use electric fan because it’s a waste of electricity.

One night, Mr. Pablo’s house caught fire. Since the fire was just a small one, it was easily extinguished by the alert servants. Instead of thanking them, however, Mr. Pablo searched each and every one of them for anything they might have stolen during the fire. Nothing was found.

The following day, all the servants went home and Mr. Pablo was left with no one to help him rebuild his beautiful house that was damaged by the fire.

I’m Turning 37

It’s my birthday tomorrow and I’m turning 37. Unlike some women, I’m not ashamed of my age. I don’t mind getting old because I believe that the older you get, the wiser you become. I may not have achieved all the things I’ve dreamed of in life yet, but I already have my share of laughter and pain and what I’ve gone through all these years is, I could say, not bad at all.

And since I’m too old for balloons, cakes and party hats, bonding time with my kids and maybe a bunch of birthday flowers will make my day special. Maybe someday, I can treat myself somewhere, out of the country for instance :D
